Montana Youth Action Network Formed

After several months of long conference calls and lots of hard work, a group of young human rights activists from around the state have formed the Montana Youth Action Network (MYAN). The new organization was officially formed after the "Youth Make a Difference" conference in Great Falls on October 18. The group currently includes youth from Anaconda, Dillon, Hamilton, Helena, Missoula, Polson, and Victor

The youth formed MYAN to confront racism, social prejudice and other forms of intolerance in their schools and communities, while promoting diversity. The group will also empower Montana youth through social action and raising awareness about social issues. MYAN will provide networking opportunities and resources to help mobilize Montana's youth and encourage a sense of solidarity for individuals and groups working alone in communities.

MYAN is currently working on publishing a zine (alternative magazine), and writing by-laws for the organization. Members are also involved in their communities, and plan on taking on more ambitious projects as the organization grows and progresses.

Participants in MYAN have already been involved in local service activities, rallies in several communities, and organizing around the state. MYAN activists in Polson have formed a local youth organization called PUNKS (Progressive, United Network of Kids). MYAN activists in Missoula and Polson have held press interviews about the group's formation.

MYAN will train youth to take action to create social change, as well become effective organizers. Any interested youth who want to get involved should contact Jodi Medlar at 442-5506, or groovinjodi@hotmail.com.
