MHRN’s Statement on Candidates Using Antisemitic, Xenophobic, and Islamophobic Tropes and Stereotypes to Garner Votes

Each election year, political candidates in Montana distribute campaign ads and literature that make use of antisemitic, xenophobic, and Islamophobic tropes and stereotypes. The use of tropes and stereotypes is always irresponsible, wrong, and dangerous, amplifying the messages of violent, fringe groups operating in our state.

Ultimately, trafficking in stereotypes and tropes promotes toxic propaganda and justifies the dehumanizing actions of bad actors threatening the safety and dignity of Jewish, immigrant, and Muslim Montanans.

Furthermore, it cheapens the democratic process for every voter. The people who are vying to represent our communities need to demonstrate to Montanans that they have the judgment and temperament to serve our state.  And when a candidate does leverage harmful tropes for votes, it’s imperative that they have the courage and humility to apologize and resolve the harm caused.

Montana Human Rights Network urges political candidates to focus on tangible solutions to address the issues affecting Montanans today like quality healthcare access, affordable housing, and equitable tax policies.
